River update from Friends of the Delaware River (FUDR)

Jul 20, 2017
The new federal Delaware River Basin Restoration Program received a promising kick start in Congress yesterday when a key appropriations committee in the U.S. House of Representatives

Great News from Capitol Hill!!
The new federal Delaware River Basin Restoration Program received a promising kick start in Congress yesterday when a key appropriations committee in the U.S. House of Representatives approved $5 million for the program. The funding bill must now receive approval from the full House of Representatives and then move through the same process in the U.S. Senate. It's not a done deal yet but a great first step in starting to generate funding that can ultimately support on the ground water quality and habitat restoration projects in the UDR region.

Thanks to all of our partners and members in the Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed (CDRW) who worked tirelessly in support of funding for this critically important program.

Delaware County Stream Corridor Management Plan Update
FUDR in partnership with the Upper Delaware River Tailwaters Coalition will be putting the finishing touches on a stream corridor management plan for the UDR region this fall. This plan goes hand in hand with our efforts to improve reservoir management and aquatic habitat and dovetails nicely with the new national Delaware River program. When DRBRP funding becomes available our plan for the upper river will help guide on the ground efforts to protect and restore the watershed!

Negotiations Continue on the Delaware Reservoir Management Plan
Discussions among all of the Decree Parties on a long term management plan for the NYC Delaware River basin reservoirs continue to move forward. UDR conservation issues such as thermal relief, elimination of "yo-yo" releases, improved water releases, and more transparency in plan development appear to all be on the negotiating table. We're hopeful to see a draft of a new plan and plenty of opportunity for public comment before the end of the year.

At the moment, we are still operating under Revision 1 PLUS the voluntary water release program agreed to by NYC, NY, PA, and DE that has spared the upper river from the dangerously low releases called for under Revision 1. Thanks again to the 4 parties that stepped up to protect the river and avoid a potentially drastic situation this summer for cold water habitat and the recreational economy of the UDR region.

Hancock Community Education Foundation Summer Morning Program
FUDR is volunteering at the HCEF Summer morning program on Tuesday July 25 9am to 11:30pm at the Robert Nichols Science Center (next to McDonald's in Hancock) - we will be providing instruction on fly tying and casting. There will be approximately 20-25 kids participating, mostly 7th & 8th graders.  Please let us know if you'll be in the area and can help out! sherri@fudr.org
