***ACTION ALERT*** The PFBC needs our help!

Trout Unlimited works closely with the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC) to protect and conserve the state’s 35,000 miles of wild trout streams. We have partnered with the agency to discover and protect new populations of wild trout, and via the Coldwater Heritage Partnership, we work to enhance and restore our waters.

Now, the agency needs our help.

The PFBC is an independent agency supported by sales of licenses and registrations for anglers and boaters—fees that have not increased for 12 years. Raising them requires action by the Pennsylvania Legislature.

The Senate has passed a bill, Senate Bill 30, that would give the PFBC authority to set its own fees for fishing licenses and boating registrations, subject to legislative oversight and public comment. But the legislation is bottled up in the House.

Rising pension and health care costs have forced the commission to cut staff and defer maintenance for several years. This fall, the commission authorized its director to slash $2 million from the 2018-19 budget if it cannot raise fees in the coming year. Cuts like these would undercut the work the PFBC does to support our wild trout fisheries, from habitat improvements to water quality protection efforts.

Please reach out to your House representative today and make your voice heard on this issue.

First, visit this page to find your legislator, then call or email to urge him or her to support Senate Bill 30. Phone numbers and email addresses can befound here

You can use this sample message, but feel free to customize it to include references to your local waters, or the work you or your chapter has done with the PFBC:

Dear Rep. [name]:

As someone who fishes in Pennsylvania, I know that I rely on the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission to help protect and conserve the state’s thousands of miles of wild trout streams. The commission works to sustain our fisheries, restore habitat, protect water quality, and provide fishing access. I’m glad to know that my fees support these efforts—and I’m willing to pay a bit more to ensure that the PFBC is able to continue this important work.

I urge you to support Senate Bill 30, which would allow the PFBC to set its own fees, subject to legislative oversight. This is common-sense legislation that would put the commission on sound financial footing again.

Sincerely, [your name]

Second, contact Rep. Keith Gillespie, chairman of the House Game & Fisheries Committee, at 717-705-7167 or kgillesp@pahousegop.com and ask him to put Senate Bill 30 up for a committee vote.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions.

Sincerely,
Charlie Charlesworth
