Since its founding in 1959, Trout Unlimited (TU) has been a national leader in protecting one of America’s greatest natural treasures—our trout and salmon fisheries. From the beginning, TU has operated under a simple yet powerful philosophy: “If we take care of the fish, the fishing will take care of itself.” By combining on-the-ground restoration work with cutting-edge science and effective advocacy, TU has earned a reputation as a trusted steward of coldwater fisheries across the country.
With over 400 chapters nationwide, TU operates through a robust grassroots network—more than 10% of which are based right here in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited (PATU) supports and represents the state’s 49 local chapters, helping to advance our shared mission at both state and national levels.
While fly fishing is a common passion among TU members, the organization welcomes all anglers regardless of preferred tackle or technique. We share a common goal: protecting and improving coldwater habitats while promoting good sportsmanship on the water. Many members embrace catch-and-release practices, understanding that “the fish you return to the water today will be there to catch again tomorrow.”
TU’s primary focus is the conservation and restoration of wild trout and salmon populations, while also acknowledging the role of hatcheries in supporting fisheries where natural reproduction is not sustainable. In fact, several TU chapters across the country operate cooperative hatcheries as part of local restoration efforts.
Although many people join TU because of a love for fishing, our true mission extends beyond the sport. TU is committed to the conservation, protection, and restoration of coldwater fishery resources—ensuring healthy waters and thriving fish populations for future generations.
