MISSION AND HISTORY

Our Mission

At Pennsylvania Trout Unlimited, our mission is clear:
To conserve, protect, restore, and sustain Pennsylvania’s coldwater fisheries and their watersheds—especially our wild trout resources.

We achieve this by:

  • Restoring streams through habitat improvement projects
  • Hosting seminars on water quality and fisheries management
  • Educating the next generation on the importance of clean water and wild trout

With over 13,000 members across 49 local chapters, we serve as a unified voice for coldwater conservation throughout the state.

A Brief History

Pennsylvania Trout Unlimited traces its roots back to 1963, when Charlie Fox, then president of the Pennsylvania Council, appointed Keith Schuyler as vice president. His task was to form a committee to develop trout fishing policy recommendations for the Pennsylvania Fish Commission.

At that time, just three local chapters existed—in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia. Since then, we’ve grown significantly in both size and impact, expanding our reach and deepening our commitment to conservation.

Our story and evolution are chronicled in A History of Trout Unlimited and the Environmental Movement in Pennsylvania by Mike Klimkos, published in 2003.
