PUBLIC LANDS

Public Lands Are Pennsylvania’s Legacy

Public lands are one of America’s greatest treasures—and they belong to all of us. Across the United States, more than 640 million acres of public land are preserved for the benefit and enjoyment of every American. Here in Pennsylvania, that legacy includes state forests, parks, game lands, and our one national forest.

Public lands are one of America’s greatest treasures—and they belong to all of us. Across the United States, more than 640 million acres of public land are preserved for the benefit and enjoyment of every American. Here in Pennsylvania, that legacy includes our expansive state forests, diverse state parks, game lands, and the Allegheny National Forest.

These lands are open to all—regardless of race, gender, background, or income. They provide the freedom to fish wild trout streams, hike scenic trails, hunt, paddle, camp, and simply connect with nature. These spaces offer a chance to escape, reflect, and ensure future generations can enjoy the same freedoms.

Pennsylvania is home to:

  • Over 2.1 million acres of state forests
  • 124 state parks covering more than 295,000 acres
  • The Allegheny National Forest, spanning more than 514,000 acres

These lands not only support thriving fish and wildlife habitats but also bolster local economies, promote tourism, and strengthen our connection to the outdoors.

At Pennsylvania Trout Unlimited, our members and supporters recognize the importance of protecting public lands. These special places safeguard coldwater resources, sustain outdoor traditions, and enrich our lives every day.
