We’re Hiring! – Conservation Communications Coordinator
Position Summary:
The Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited (PATU) is seeking a reliable and energetic person with strong communication and social skills to facilitate and improve our internal and external communications and help recruit, retain, and reactivate members across Pennsylvania. This full-time position includes lead responsibility for managing PATU’s digital communications programs (e-mail, website, social media), as well as assisting PATU board members and volunteers to plan and implement community engagement projects from conservation and fishing events to advocacy and fundraising. The position will be based out of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, with flexibility for a home/remote workplace arrangement located within Pennsylvania. The position will entail:
Website management. Manage www.patrout.org, www.coldwaterheritage.org, www.coldwaterconference.org, and www.patroutintheclassroom.org websites, collect and post content from other TU staff and volunteers as well as generating original, timely content. Includes regular blog article posting, developing an online “Action Center” for advocacy, and managing the PATU events calendar.
E-communications. Work with volunteer newsletter editor and email manager to solicit and generate original articles for quarterly “PA Trout” e-newsletter and “My PATU Monthly” email. Prepare and send other discrete emails to various parts of PATU’s mailing list such as event announcements, raffle ticket sales, and important “breaking news” messages. Assist Program Director and board of directors with digital communications surrounding PATU programs such as Trout in the Classroom and STREAM Girls.
Publications. Participate with board of directors, program director, and volunteers in developing print/digital publications including an annual report and issue/project specific brochures and reports.
Social media. Manage content for PATU’s social media presence, ensuring regular postings with Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter and developing strategies for enhanced use of YouTube and possibly other platforms.
External communications. Coordinate delivery of PATU information to external audiences through press releases and placement of articles with local media outlets, development of content for distribution through partners (such as fly-fishing retailers), and other new tactics for communicating PATU messages to the broader public. Help promote PATU and chapter stories in National TU media outlets where appropriate.
Internal communications. Coordinate sharing of National Trout Unlimited messaging into PATU communications where appropriate with staff and chapter webmasters/communication managers here in Pennsylvania. Provide guidance and link chapters to available communication resources and trainings.
Trout in the Classroom. Assist PATU Program Director and PA Fish and Boat Commission TIC Coordinator with implementation of the TIC program, communications with teachers and program partners, and educational opportunities for teachers, students, and program partners, such as the biennial PA Trout in the Classroom Summit and annual TIC training workshops (virtual and in-person). Participate in food packing and egg shipping days and help administer the annual PATU TIC grant program.
Other duties. Follow and regularly update PATU’s communications plan to help fulfill the objectives of the PATU strategic plan. Assist PATU volunteers and partners with education and outreach events such as family fishing programs, Women’s Intro to Fly Fishing, STREAM Keepers, and STREAM Girls. Participate in core PATU events such as quarterly board meetings, PATU annual meeting, biennial Keystone Coldwater Conference, and Women’s Leadership Retreat. Assist with administrative tasks as requested by the board of directors or Program Director. Assist with fundraising to support PATU programs and strategic plan goals. Other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; relevant professional experience can be substituted for a degree.
• Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
• Solid technical ability with website management, social media, and database management.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google suites; experience with Weebly, WordPress, Canva, Adobe, and HootSuite platforms is helpful but not required.
• Previous experience or demonstrated ability in communications, media relations, volunteer engagement, and/or public outreach.
• Dedicated commitment to conservation.
• Ability to travel statewide and work weekend and evening hours when needed.
• Demonstrated creativity and initiative strongly desired.
• Background knowledge in watershed and fishery conservation issues and angling is a plus.
• Must be willing to become a PA Fish and Boat Commission-certified Fishing Skills Instructor.
